HISTORY OF SAN LORENZO RUIZ DE MANILA
The Filipino presence in the Holy Land began in the 1970s with the individuals from the various sectors including religious communities, UN peacekeepers, and domestic workers. They established themselves as caregivers and essential workers in Israeli health services. Overtime, the Filipino community found a home in the Church, gathering all places like Notre Dame Centre in Jerusalem. This space became central to their spiritual and social life. Initially led by figures such as Fr. Adam Civu, who embraced Filipino culture and cuisine. And later supported by Filipino Priests like Fr. Alfredo Maravilla, Teresian Association, The St. Paul of Chartres Sisters who were already integrated in the Community, The Salesian Filipino Seminarians, and Father Hermes a student Priest, the community grew and formalized its structure. The San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila Chaplaincy was established in 1994, named after the first Filipino Saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz. This Chaplaincy aimed to create a Christ-centered, prayerful community, focusing on Unity, Spiritual growth and services. Several key initiatives were launched, including Couples for Christ, El Shaddai, and the Jerusalem Angels Society, which organized religious and cultural activities. Despite challenges, such as the departure of keys figures and the eventual split of the community into separate entities, the spirit of service and unity endured. In 2000. Reflecting the evolving needs and dynamics of the Filipino diaspora in Jerusalem. The transformation from the San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila Community signifies the adaptability and resilience of the community.
